Sagittarius – The Philosopher

The sign of Sagittarius which is the ninth sign of the zodiac (November 23 through December 21). Developmentally from about forty-five to fifty-six, Sagittarians are the sign considered to be the wise teacher/seeking justice/the moral authority. This sign is motivated by the search for truth and meaning. Broadminded, they travel far and wide in their studies. Generous with their time, resources and knowledge; they share their wisdom that comes from experiencing what they teach. Enjoying foreign places and all religions, they are philosophical and open-minded. This sign needs lots of room to roam so freedom is a big deal. Sometimes they can express dogmatic and rigid views because they are so focused on what they believe in. Honest to a fault, sometimes blunt and rude, but you will know where you stand with them as they will tell you.

You might also see that ruled by the expansive planet Jupiter, they overdo, overspend, are impractical and extravagant. You will also see they are visionary and prophetic as they see trends in the future no one else sees. Cheerful, funny and optimistic, they can almost become ‘Pollyanna’ in their outlook, always seeing the glass not just half full, but full to the top! Life obliges their hope and faith in positive outcomes and many blessings come their way.

Now what can be in the Shadow?

The opposite sign of the zodiac is Gemini which describes a much more scattered, flighty, and talkative sign. Unlike Sagittarius, their minds are skittish with a much shorter attention span. Curious about a multitude of ideas and subjects, they learn a little about a lot earning them the title, jack-of-all-trades. Witty, smart, even brilliant although clearly fascinated by the facile as they thrive on variety and have a distinct need for constant mental stimulation however trivial.

It’s difficult to tie them down as they have so many social possibilities that it’s a challenge to get them to commit to anything. For example, let’s say you invite your Gemini friend or colleague over for dinner or to an event. They tell you they might be there; they’d like to; but they are not sure; so they leave you hanging. Over time, you notice they do it all the time as that is just the way they are. Gemini energy which is mutable and air has a fickle, nervous, changeable characteristic or quality and like quick silver, doesn’t like to be contained. Peter Pan-like, they refuse to grow up and be responsible so many times can leave a trail of unfinished relationships or projects. Others see them as unreliable and inconstant.

There is also an amoral side to Gemini since they are a dual sign (twins) displaying two in one, they can lie to you outright without blinking an eye. They can promote a position one day and then take the opposite position the next day. Using their intellect and verbal skills for the sake of keeping things light and fun, they will play the devil’s advocate to stir the pot when things get too boring. This is the trickster side of Gemini.

Life goes on in its evolutionary spiral of relationships, situations, and events. Reflecting on those who push our buttons or repulse us and continuously going inside ourselves to ask for help from our inner Self is how we do Shadow work. It can become our way of being in the world as we become accustomed to knowing that we are evolving, albeit slowly.

A real gem of the miraculous enters the picture of our day-to-day journey when we get a glimpse of the divine working in all of our life’s twists and turns. As it says in the Bible, “God meant it all for good.”

I have always been intrigued by Jung’s view of the soul. He didn’t use the term in the usual way that we hear of our soul in religious terms such as in theology. He described our soul as a part of us that becomes our individual personality from the experiences of having a dialogue between our conscious and unconscious.
