The Vagus Nerve: The Body’s Communication Superhighway

Have you ever wondered where the phrase “gut feeling” comes from? For many, the expression “gut feeling” refers to our intuition; some refer to it as animal instinct. What we know now is that the gut has a separate nervous system from the brain. It sends signals to the brain so, the saying “think with your gut” has some real truth to it.

Recent findings show that the vagus nerve serves as a pretty direct “cable” responsible for communication between our brain and our gut, keeping track of and reacting to interoceptive signals that is, information about what’s going on inside our body. Since vagus nerve is connected to the vital functions of our body – like breath, heartbeat, swallowing, and many more – we better learn how to keep it strong. The video below explains things well and in a simple manner.
