This means that all of our emotions and beliefs are still there even if we decide to ignore them in the moment. They don’t leave us. They stay within us but become invisible to us. In mythology, this is represented by the Greek god Hades, or the Roman god Pluto, who wore a helmet that made him invisible to mortals. Hades, God of the Underworld, represents our darker thoughts, our guilt and shame, obsessions, compulsions and beliefs about ourselves which are hidden from consciousness until we resurrect them and bring them up from below.
Whatever we deem too negative to express, whatever goes against our highest ideals will be conveniently projected out into the world. Jung says, “Experience shows that the carrier of the projection is not just any object but is always one that proves adequate to the nature of the content projected —it must offer the content a “hook” to hang on.” We are not imagining things. People will be expressing certain characteristics or acting out behaviors often in an extreme form especially when they are around us in particular – not necessarily when they are with anyone else! That is why we can easily see it, and it is annoying to us.
We may unconsciously choose the same kind of partner, friend, or boss several times before we begin to recognize that we are the common denominator in these challenging experiences with others. You will know you are headed toward healthier relationships when you begin to reflect on just what these opposites are doing in your life and what the Universe and your own unconscious wants from you.
