And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new
and trust the magic of beginnings.” (Meister Eckhart)
The Chinese New Year ushers in a new cycle each year on the day following the New Moon of Aquarius. This year, on February 16, 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse begins. For the sake of comparison, previous Horse years occurred in 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966 (the last Fire Horse), 1954, 1942, 1930, and 1918. Horse years always follow Snake years in the Chinese zodiac, ushering in new opportunities and the energy and vitality to take creative action to manifest the visions which have emerged from the cleansing, transformative work of Snake. The intense inner work of Yin, feminine Snake (shedding of the old skin, outgrowing an old identity, purging outdated narratives, confronting, releasing and healing of old wounds/dysfunctional habits) gives way to a surge of masculine projection of yang energy to create our lives anew. Horse years often coincide with major lifepath turning points and the courage to explore previously untapped potentials discovered in the Year of the Snake. If you have done the work of Snake, you have cleared space spiritually, emotionally and energetically, to make ready for something new to come. You have released the weight of that which no longer serves your evolutionary process, and are now ready to rise.
The fire element makes for an especially frisky Horse, a wild stallion, so to speak, adding energetic intensity, reactivated creativity and courage to the mix. This is also a number ONE Universal Year in numerology, which coincides with rebirth and new beginnings following the completions of the previous NINE year. This may make us a bit more impulsive and quick to act, and some conscious tempering may be required when it comes to major life decisions. But for the most part, 2026 is a year to move forward boldly, with clarity, passion and commitment. There is a natural embodied momentum during Horse years, combined with an intense desire for freedom and progress. Renewed inspiration and greater ease of alignment (synchronicity and “luck”) foster breakthroughs and external manifestation of vision seeking expression.
Historically speaking, Horse’s desire for adventure shows up in the form of exploration, especially of space. Pluto was discovered in 1930. Our first image of Earth from space, provided by Aerobee, came in 1954. In 1966, Luna 10 orbited the Moon for the first time, and Gene Roddenberry’s culturally revolutionary television series, Star Trek, premiered. The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990, and NASA’s Mars Odyssey Probe in 2002. Space X was also founded in 2002. Scientific exploration and major advances in medical technology and the treatment of disease also coincide with Horse years. In 1954 polio was eradicated with the first mass inoculation of the polio vaccine, and in 1978, smallpox was eradicated. The first human kidney transplant (1954), the first IVF baby (1978), and the first successful penis transplant (2014) all occurred during Horse years. Ironically, Horse years have also coincided with worldwide health crises, like the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918, the SARS Virus of 2002, and the Ebola Outbreak of 2014. Such events inspired the need for international cooperation to control and avert deadly global pandemics, fostering the formation of WHO (World Health Organization) in 1978 by the UN, also created during The Horse Year of 1942. Civil disobedience and social unrest, especially in response to injustice suffered by women and minority populations, also dominate the years of freedom loving Horse. Ghandi’s Salt March against Great Britain of 1930, and the Harlem Race Riots of 1942, the “Black Lives Matter” protests of 2014 are examples of the more famous of these. Advancements in Women’s Rights often occur during Horse Years: In 1918, women finally won the right to vote in Great Britain and the US; In 1942, the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp (WAAC) was formed, opening the door for women who so desired to join the military; and in 2014, the Church of England adopted the legislation to allow for female bishops. The world tends to get a little smaller during Horse years, as circumstances force awareness of how interconnected and dependent we are on each other globally, fostering greater attempts at global cooperation, like the establishment of the UN in 1942, or the International Criminal Court of 2002. FYI, the World Wide Web also went online in 1990.
Horse seeks motion, adventure and freedom. Horse promises us a year of initiation and inspired action, based on a new sense of direction and purpose. This is definitely the year to start something new and celebrate a new cycle beginning. However, moving from such intense yin water energy, like we experienced in 2025, into the equally intense yang fire energy of 2026 does require some adjustment. We must give our bodies what they need to recalibrate in order to work with this new energy in a good and healthy way. Burnout, stress from overextending, accidents due to reckless, careless or thoughtless action, volatile eruptions that exacerbate difficult situations, etc. are all possible expressions of the darker side of Horse Year energy. But if you did the clearing, cleansing work required of Snake in 2025, your vision is clear and you are primed and ready for a new chapter of life to take form. So saddle up and hop on board! It’s time to rise, lovingly greet and embrace the new you, and confidently move forward toward the destiny of your dreams. Wishing you all a great ride!
