The sign of Pisces is the 12th sign of the zodiac (February 19 through March 20). Developmentally from about eighty years old to the end of life, Pisceans are considered to be the sign that is the most compassionate and gentle of all the signs. They have an innate capacity for becoming selfless and nonjudgmental. Often sacrificing for others, they go about expressing genuine concern for the suffering they see in the world. They need healthy outlets for their boundless ability to love everyone impersonally and are often found volunteering for charitable work, helping troubled teens, reading to the elderly or blind at a retirement home — anything that helps those who cannot help themselves. Devoted, caring, loving and kind, they can at times have porous boundaries and be taken advantage of when being too naively gullible. Forgiveness for them is easy as they see the whole person instead of only their negative or self-destructive behavior. They also have psychic ability and can attune to higher states of consciousness. Many have clairvoyant gifts with ESP fully developed.
Spiritually oriented, they are drawn to meditation, nature retreats, healing workshops — anything that allows them to experience oneness and escape the harsh realities of everyday life. Escapism through addictions to drugs or alcohol can be their Achilles heel unless they channel their often fluid and diffusive energy. Living in their amazing imaginations, they are also artistic and creative, with gifts for writing music and poetry.
So, what can be in the Shadow?
The opposite sign of Pisces is Virgo, which is a much more analytical, picky and compulsive about order sign. This sign worries excessively about everything with a very annoying habit of criticizing others when they don’t fully know the person or the issue. They can turn that critical and carping nature on themselves, seeing themselves as inferior and lacking. Born skeptics, they have the reputation of the doubting Thomas syndrome. If they can’t see the end result in advance, they will hesitate to even try to take risks. Their first inclination is always to be in fear of what can go wrong, which ends up impeding their ability to envision possibilities.
Extremely body and health conscious, they can become hypochondriacs, afraid of every germ that could be around them. Many of this sign dominant end up spinsters, alone because no one and nothing is perfect enough. If they do stay in relationships long-term, they incessantly nag their frustrated partners who must try to get used to their nitpicking ways. Often, they are workaholics too as they can’t seem to ever leave well enough alone.
“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being. It may even be assumed that just as the unconscious affects us, so the increase in our consciousness affects the unconscious.”
—Carl Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, paragraph 326
With a relationship to our soul, we can experience greater self-compassion and empathy for others. In doing inner work together, we are making an effort to achieve balance with our partners and grow up. By responsibly taking back our projections from each other — our shadow, our mother and father complexes and in time, with even greater awareness, our Anima and Animus, we evolve and this is our contribution to the whole Cosmos. The Self in each of us has chosen our partners for our continued self-knowledge and spiritual evolution. The middle way of balance becomes our mantra for living. Through this growth process, we soften. True love and heart-centered best friends is the result of making the commitment to own our own shadow.
