Blending together Western and Chinese Astrologies

Blending Astrology

How to better understand relationship dynamics

As the Chinese Year of the Rat gets underway (Lunar New Year 2020 begins on January 25th), a new 12-year cycle starts within that system.  Now seems an appropriate time to ponder why it is that different established astrological systems – Western, Vedic/Hindu, Chinese, etc. are not often studied together or used in combination for client consultations. Western astrology alone offers so many predictive techniques that it can become too much information to further integrate. But in certain situations, useful combinations have been artfully utilized by some astrologers within their client consultations.  Many astrologers are indeed recently experiencing great success cross-pollinating various fields of study with traditional astrology.  For example, Financial Astrology and Medical Astrology are really taking off as focus areas.  An increasing number of unions using different astrological methodology are on our horizon.

When looking at Chinese astrology and Western astrology, one can easily notice intriguing similarities that beg to be put together – each consists of a zodiac (wheel) divided into 12 separate and distinct areas depicting personalities – monthly breakout in the case of Western and yearly format for Chinese.  These two unique systems are so accomplished in their own rite and can mutually blend.  It is almost as though they belong together to form a super hybrid which will reveal a bigger truth.

In the spirit of taking that idea a step further and creatively overlaying these two systems together, an interesting cyclical pattern is formed that is especially helpful to more fully explore two people’s relationship synastry. Interestingly, the pattern is evidenced within strong family ties in addition to successful and close personal friendships.  It brings about an understanding as to laws of attraction and why there are degrees measuring comparative happiness from relationships.  It reveals that we each have different needs, when seeking out companionship, and search for an understanding and spiritual connection that is tailored to our soul’s evolution.  It speaks to one’s self awareness and ultimately level of consciousness when reacting to others and allowing someone to gain personal influence. There is a saying in life… “very often it is not what you know but who you know that determines your fate”.  Understanding the process behind relationship choices will serve to provide even greater consciousness and respect for individuality as well as our own struggle, growth and purpose in this lifetime.

Blending Western and Chinese astrology allows to identify areas where both year-sign and month-sign are a comfortable fit and potentially will produce a very good match.  There are various ways a couple can satisfy a “date point” area.  This methodology can be incorporated within an individual’s chart reading and is useful along with established relationship synastry theory to provide a broader perspective.

To briefly illustrate how things work,  let’s take Alan Alda as an example. He was born in the Year of the Rat and  enjoys a widely-publicized, happy marriage, lasting 61 years so far.  He has an Aquarius sun sign, born January 28.  His wife Arlene is a Pisces Rooster, born March 12.  Typically, a Rooster and Rat pairing get very low marks on the Chinese zodiac compatibility scale.  Likewise, Aquarius and Pisces are thought to be a highly unlikely long-term match in Western astrology.  However, the Rooster (Arlene) is assigned a date point area at her husband’s birthday. The Rat (Alan Alda) is a comfortable fit likewise to the area at his wife’s birthday in the sign of Pisces.  They satisfy each other, based on the combined zodiac pattern, and therefore are destined to work together harmoniously!

I wish everyone a wonderful Valentine’s Day and also Galentine’s Day (on Feb. 13th – a celebration of platonic friendship).  It is good to remember the reason why we enjoy this celebration – to honor our best relationships. These serve to help us grow and evolve so we can achieve our loftiest goals and a have a super great quality of life.  May we all enjoy lives with much happiness and prosperity with family and loved ones!
